How to Defrag Your iPod

The iPod is the walkman of the 21st century. Appearing in all sorts of avatars – the Classic, the Nano, the Shuffle and the Touch, the iPod has become the integral part of existence for many of us. Like any other device, continuous usage of the iPod reduces its capabilities. Users have often noticed that after a few months of usage, certain problems pop up.

The iPod Classic is hard drive based while the other models use flash memory. All iPods, except iPod Touch can also work as external storage device. The storage is basically a hard disk, which can be accessed by setting the iPod to “disk mode” through iTunes or other similar software. A Mac OS X formatted iPod uses the HFS+ File format, while a Windows formatted iPod uses the FAT32 format. The default file system used in iPods nowadays in FAT32.

This hard disk can be defragmented like other internal and external storage devices. De-fragmenting is a good option because it will not erase any of the data, it will only organize the disc space usage and optimize it for faster results. For this, you will need the disc defragmenter that comes with windows, or some other similar defragmenting software.
Follow the simple steps below to defragment your iPod hard disk:
? Connect the iPod to your computer.
? Open the iTunes interface.
? Select the iPod from the menu in the left, and then click on the “Enable Disk Use” among the options in the right side of the screen.
? Click on the “Apply” button to apply your choice.
? The iPod will start showing as an external hard disk on your “My Computer” explorer window.
